What if I feel anxious before my session?

We know starting online can feel unfamiliar. These answers may help you feel more comfortable before booking.

How to prepare for your online session

Starting online doesn’t require anything complicated. A few small preparations can help you feel more comfortable, focused, and emotionally safe.

Choose a quiet and private space

Try to find a place where you feel safe to talk without interruption. This might be a bedroom, quiet workspace, or even a parked car if that feels more private.

You don’t need the “perfect” environment — just somewhere you can speak openly and feel relatively at ease.

Use headphones if possible

Headphones can improve sound quality and help maintain privacy. They also create a sense of emotional containment, making it easier to stay present in the session.

Check your technology beforehand

A stable internet connection and a charged device can help the session run smoothly. It can be helpful to open your session link a few minutes early so you’re not rushing.

If technical issues happen, your mental health professional will support you in reconnecting.

Have something comforting nearby

Some people find it helpful to have water, tissues, a blanket, or a comforting object nearby. Sessions can bring up emotions, so small comforts can help you stay grounded.

Give yourself a few quiet minutes before and after

If possible, allow a little space before the session to settle and after the session to reflect. Moving straight into work or family responsibilities can feel emotionally abrupt.

Even five minutes can help you integrate what was discussed.

You don’t need to prepare what to say

There is no pressure to arrive with the “right words.” Your mental health professional will gently support the conversation. It’s okay if you feel unsure, quiet, emotional, or don’t know where to begin.

Simply showing up is enough.

FAQ

What happens in the first session?

Your first session is a gentle space to talk about what has brought you to counselling, what you hope for, and whether the counsellor feels like the right fit.

What if I need to change my appointment?

Your confirmation email includes a link to reschedule or cancel your session. We ask that changes are made within the clinic’s cancellation window so the time can be offered to someone else. If unexpected circumstances arise, you’re always welcome to contact us and we’ll do our best to help.

How do I know which mental health professional to choose?

You can browse the mental health directory and choose someone whose approach or specialisms feel right, or simply book the first available appointment if you’d prefer to get started quickly.

Is online sessions confidential?

Everything discussed in sessions remains private, except in rare situations where there is serious risk of harm to you or someone else. Your counsellor will explain confidentiality clearly in the first session so you understand how your information is protected.

Is the technology secure?

Links are sent directly to you and sessions are not recorded unless explicitly agreed in advance. We recommend using a private internet connection and a quiet space where you feel safe to talk openly.

What can I do to make my sessions more private?

Using headphones and choosing a quiet, private space can help you feel more comfortable and maintain confidentiality.

What happens if the connection drops?

If the connection is interrupted, your mental health professional will attempt to reconnect or contact you to continue the session by telephone.

How is my personal information stored?

Your personal information is stored securely in line with data protection and privacy requirements.

Is online sessions suitable for emergencies?

If you are in immediate danger or need urgent support, please contact emergency services, NHS urgent care, or a crisis helpline. Mental health professional sessions can support ongoing emotional wellbeing but cannot replace emergency intervention.
