  • This qualification is intended for individuals who have already completed a recognised Level 2 qualification in counselling skills and are ready to deepen their knowledge and move closer to becoming a professional counsellor.

It’s ideal for those who want to:

    • Take the next step in their counselling training journey by building on foundational skills and progressing toward practitioner-level qualifications, such as the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling.

    • Explore counselling theory, ethics, and mental health in greater depth, gaining insight into different theoretical approaches, ethical frameworks (such as the BACP Ethical Framework), and the wider context in which counselling takes place.

    • Prepare for working as a professional counsellor in an agency setting, developing an understanding of how professional counselling services operate, what is expected of a trainee or newly qualified counsellor, and how to work ethically and safely within organisational boundaries.

This course not only supports progression into formal counselling practice, but also strengthens emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and reflective skills—qualities that are valuable in a wide range of professional helping roles.

  • This course is ideal for individuals who have already completed a recognised Level 2 counselling skills qualification and are ready to take the next step in their counselling journey.

    It’s particularly suited to:

    • Aspiring professional counsellors who want to progress toward practitioner training and eventually work in private practice, organisations, or agency settings.

    • Learners looking to deepen their understanding of counselling theory and ethics, and explore how mental health issues can impact the helping relationship.

    • Individuals using counselling skills in other roles, such as teaching, nursing, social care, youth work, coaching, or pastoral support, who want to enhance their effectiveness and understanding.

    • Those interested in personal growth and emotional insight, who wish to gain more self-awareness, improve communication skills, and reflect on their own values, beliefs, and relationships.

This qualification is the bridge between basic helping skills and professional counselling practice, offering insight, depth, and direction for your next steps.

  • To apply for the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies, you’ll need to have successfully completed a Level 2 qualification in counselling skills (such as the CPCAB Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills or an equivalent).

    You’ll also need:

    • A good standard of written and spoken English to complete written assignments and participate in group discussions.

    • A commitment to personal development, self-reflection, and learning within a group setting.

    • The emotional readiness to explore sensitive topics and support others as part of your training.

  • Completing the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies is an exciting and meaningful step forward in your counselling journey. It prepares you for entry into practitioner-level training and opens doors to a range of opportunities.

Most learners progress on to the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, where you will begin working with real clients under supervision and develop the competencies needed to practise as a professional counsellor.

This course also strengthens your employability and effectiveness in a variety of helping roles. Whether you're working in education, health and social care, youth services, or pastoral support, the deeper understanding and enhanced skills gained at Level 3 will benefit both you and the people you support.

Additionally, the reflective and interpersonal skills you develop may inspire further training in related areas such as coaching, mental health, wellbeing, or supervision in the future.

This qualification has been assessed and deemed to have met the standards expected for introduction level training for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

This qualification forms an important part of a progression route in counselling training, but on its own, it does not allow a graduate to practice as a qualified counsellor, gain entry to an Accredited Register or refer to themselves as ‘a specialist’ in the subject matter unless they have other qualifications/training to support this.
